Spring is in the air and there’s no better time to visit our local Turramurra Lookout Community Garden.

If you are in Turramurra around lunchtime – do yourself a favour – grab your lunch in the Turramurra Village and pop across the road to enjoy a quiet break in the Turramurra Lookout Community Garden under the canopy of the crab apple tree.

For over seven years now, the Turramurra local community have been enjoying the fruits of the TLC Garden. Its creation has been a labour of love for many – but was originally initiated by John Dailey – Garden President, and 2016 winner of the Ku-ring-gai Citizen of the Year Award, and Julie Antill who collaborated with the community and council, eventually resulting in a home for the garden at Lookout Park.

A $20,000 foundation grant from the Turramurra and Lindfield Community Bank branches was used to initiate ground works on the sloping block and establish the base for this wonderful community space. Since then the garden has evolved and flourished with approximately 55 members and many community groups enjoying the space regularly. Eight years on and a considerable amount of work later, there is now a well-established garden with both communal areas and 24 individual plots.

The garden has become a place for socialising and learning for the like-minded community members who gather to tend to the garden each Saturday. Members learn from each other and often have guest speakers on topics relating to gardening and sustainable living. The highlight for many each Saturday, is the sometimes lengthy and always delicious morning tea held after each working bee.

The small dedicated committee recently received a Community Service Environmental Award, recognising the efforts the garden has made in its organic approach since inception.

“It is great to see our efforts being recognised. We work very hard at our organic approach using tank water, drip irrigation, worm farms and native bees. We also make our own comfrey tea, weed tea and worm tea. We make our own compost and collect local veggie offcuts and coffee discards for use in that compost. It really is a community effort” John Dailey – TLC Garden President

The Turramurra and Lindfield Community Bank branches are immensely proud to have been involved with this rewarding community project. We would like to congratulate John and the TLC Garden committee on the recent award and acknowledge the hard work they have put into this beautiful community space.

Turramurra High School Celebrates 50 Years!

One of the great benefits of our work at the Turramurra and Lindfield Community Bank branches is being able to support an amazing array of projects that make a huge difference to our community. This was evident recently when Turramurra High School celebrated their 50th Anniversary.

During this celebration, past and present students, teachers and parents were all invited to a ‘Back to Turramurra Day’ where they enjoyed school tours, Turramurra trivia, and student performances. However, the highlight of the day was the smoking ceremony to unveil the Darinyun Walkway and outdoor learning area, which was performed by Guringai elder Laurie Brimson. The walkway celebrates Aboriginal culture and offers students a unique outdoor technology and learning experience. Centred on local indigenous flora and fauna, QR codes stationed along the walk connect students and visitors with information about specific flora that played an important role in the daily lives of the Guringai people.

The latest unveiling of the Darinyun Walkway is yet another example of what the school has been able to achieve since launching the ‘Inside Out’ initiative. Originally begun in 2014, the ‘Inside Out’ project was started with the purpose of raising funds to enable the creation of innovative and inspirational outdoor learning environments for the students.

Turramurra and Lindfield Community Bank branches partnered this project, organising and funding a ‘Paver fundraiser’ which raised over $22,000, along with providing 50% of the seed money. We were also pleased to be able to provide an interest free loan to the school for the outstanding funds required for the project.

This ambitious project brought together members from the local community including Turramurra Rotary, the TLC Garden, Men’s Shed plus many others who worked together under the direction of the school’s P&C. What a privilege to see a community pull together for the benefit of our future generations.

It was extremely rewarding for the branch management and staff to see School Captain Midori Sugiyama’s involvement in the celebrations of the school’s 50th Anniversary. Midori was one of the students from THS who participated in a Youth Observer program in 2016, which enabled students to sit in on the Turramurra and Lindfield Community Bank board meetings. The Youth Observer program has been running successfully with THS for several years, and in 2017 four new students were selected to observe the board in action and gain real-life learning experiences.

At the Turramurra and Lindfield Community Bank branches, we are immensely proud of the long-standing relationship we have with Turramurra High School and look forward to continuing to provide support over the years ahead.

Fight Against Cancer – Partnership with the San Foundation.

There are many local organisations doing amazing things within our community, and the Turramurra and Lindfield Community Bank branches make a concerted effort to support as many of these community projects as possible. A project that we are particularly proud of is the partnership with the San Foundation to Fight Against Cancer.

Whilst the Fight Against Cancer is an ongoing initiative, the official opening of the San Integrated Cancer Centre was recently celebrated. The San Integrated Cancer Centre is a state-of-the-art centre of excellence, which builds on the San’s existing expertise, experience and world-class reputation providing an integrated treatment centre for patients with cancer and other chronic diseases.

The San Foundation is continually looking for financial support to ensure that major projects such as the Integrated Cancer Centre are able to provide the best facilities, staffing and treatment options available. When the Turramurra and Lindfield Community Bank branches found out about what the San Foundation was trying to achieve, we jumped at the opportunity to help.

Late last year, we were thrilled to be able to present the San Foundation with a cheque for $5000 to help fight cancer.

In addition to the $5000 donation, a referral rewards program was put in place to encourage ongoing donations. When any Adventist HealthCare staff, patients or community friends are referred to the Turramurra and Lindfield Community Bank branches and draw down a home or investment loan, $500 will be donated to the San Foundation. Not only will the San Foundation benefit from this program, the person responsible for the loan draw down will also receive a saving of $600 from the upfront loan fees. This is a great initiative to continually drive donations from the Community Bank branches into the San Foundation.

Barbara Ward – Managing Director, San Foundation commented: “Turramurra and Lindfield Community Bank branches have shown tremendous support to the San Foundation, we are very grateful for the generous donation of $5,000 and this great community initiative. We hope many people will support us”
