Studio ARTES

A community organisation deserving of the spotlight this month is Studio ARTES.

Studio ARTES is an independent, not-for-profit creative arts service providing opportunity for people living with disability to express their true potential though creative activities, life skills and recreational activities.

Having helped more than 2000 members realise their potential over the past 17 years, Studio ARTES is now shining after what has been a challenging couple of years. Suffering a major fire at their main premises back in April 2016 it has been a long road to rebuild the new premises and fit it out with the specialist equipment and facilities that are required to operate as a leading creative arts service provider.

The brand new purpose-built facility at 33 Jersey Street would not have been possible without major fundraising events like the upcoming Ride a day in my wheels or the local community, who generously donated to help rebuild.

Organisations such as the Turramurra & Lindfield Community Bank branches, Hornsby Council, Rotary Club, Lions Club, Westfield Hornsby, along with local schools, clubs such as Hornsby RSL, local politicians, and local charities have all helped to keep Studio ARTES running.

Fundraising events such as the annual Ride a day in my wheels, bring further community awareness of the service Studio ARTES provide along with awareness and understanding of the daily struggles that people living with disability face. The event invites people to look at life from a wheelchair-user’s perspective and challenge themselves to complete a list of physical and mental tasks, whilst in a wheelchair.

Now in its 7th year, the major fundraising event takes place in the Hornsby Shopping Mall in partnership with Westfield Hornsby and Hornsby Council. You can come along to support studio ARTES and take a ride for yourself on the 9th of December. You can also enjoy performances by some of the Studio ARTES members who have been busy rehearsing for the big day to show the public just how amazing they can be.

If you can’t make it along to Ride a day in my wheels on the 9th of December, you can help Studio ARTES by donating new art supplies at either the Turramurra or Lindfield Community Bank branches. Collections of art supplies will be running throughout November and December.
